The inaugural Corporate Sports Championship Dubai, held in collaboration with Dubai Sports Council, finished with a flourish on Saturday night February 23 with many of the UAE top companies taking home cash and prizes to the value of AED300,000.
du were the big winners on the night taking home the Corporate Sports shield as the overall champions plus the Excellence Award for the team with the most participants.
But du were not the only company to excel over the weekend, as Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) claimed a unique double.
Two of the most fiercely competed sports at the Championship were Cricket and Football, with DIB pulling off their remarkable double by winning both tournaments.
In football, the classy DIB side were imperious in the group stages beginning with a 8-1 victory over Dial-A-Battery, which turned out to be the only goal they would concede in the early stages of the tournament going on to defeat Endress + Hauser 8-0 and a strong NAFFCO line up 3-0.
In the round of 16 DIB again kept a clean sheet defeating Meraas 3-0, before they met their first real test in the quarter final conceding twice as they trounced PWC 5-2.
In the final four they came up against a pumped up Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority (DAFZA) team but held firm winning 4-1. In the final they were held back briefly by Boston Consulting Group 1 before again going on to win 4-2.
It was a stunning performance for the largely Emirati team who in total scored 35 goals during the tournament conceding just six.
In the Cricket competition DIB had a much tougher time edging through a thrilling semi-final and final by a combined total of just seven runs.
Their campaign started in Group A with a comfortable 64-39 victory over Al Basti followed by a highly impressive 83-11 victory over Saudi German Hospital. In their final group match they overcame a strong Du line up 91-42.
In the quarter finals they eased past Meraas 88-44 but much tougher tests were in store as they squeaked past Du again by just three runs in the semi-final 77-74 and in the decider they triumphed by just one more run, beating NAFFCO 69-65.
Combined it was a stunning performance by DIB who as a company went undefeated throughout the entire Championship winning 13 out of 13 matches in football and cricket.
Their efforts saw them deservedly clinch the under 20 award for the best performance by a company with less than 20 participants in the tournament and set a very high benchmark for future Corporate Sports Championships.
